MAZDA RX8 ENGINE WEAR AND CARBON MANAGEMENT
RX8 ENGINE HIGH WEAR RATE
Models of Mazda Rx8 built 2003 to 2007 have high wear rates of rotor housing, endplate housing and apex seal due to inadequate factory oil injection distribution.
SOLUTION
To mitigate the incidence of excessive wear on these components, I recommend adding small amount of Amsoil 2 cycle oil to the cars fuel when refilling at the petrol pump. Amsoil 2 cycle oil should be added at a comparable low rate of approx. 500 to 1.
Amsoil 2 cycle oil is a high quality synthetic premix oil generally used in 2 cycle engines such as go karts, motorcycles etc.
BENEFITS
- Lubricating apex seals and rotor housing surfaces
- Reduced internal seal wear and associated housing surface wear
- Reduced seal temperatures
- Reduce rotor housing chatter marks
- Extend life of apex seal avoiding early apex seal failure
Testing by world renowned Mazda Rotary experts, Racing Beat USA (RB)
While undertaking development work on the RX-8 Renesis engine, RB decided to introduce extra oil into the fuel to monitor the effect. To RB surprise, this additional oil increased power! Further dyno testing found that by adding 10 oz. of 2-Stroke Oil to 6 gallons of fuel, RB gained an average of 1.7 HP from 2000-9000 RPM, along with an increase in peak power of 4 HP. RB validated this increase by changing back to a “non-oiled” fuel – and the power returned to the previous level. Later, RB tried the same test with another brand of synthetic oil with nearly the same results.

This certainly suggests that the effect of adding 2 cycle oil to your petrol results in less friction and improved sealing performance. As we all know, less friction means less wear and less heat created between sealing surfaces.
Is there a disadvantage aside from slight additional cost? I think it would be reasonable to expect a slight increase in unburned fuel contamination, but nothing the catalytic converter could not handle.
RX8 ENGINE CARBON BUILDUP
Models of Mazda Rx8 built 2003 to 2007 produce excessive amounts of carbon, especially when regularly driven quietly and often spending time sitting in traffic.
Carbon is an abrasive, therefore excessive carbon can cause accelerated wear inside your engine, apex seals and housings.
Quietly driving your Rx8 allows excessive carbon to build up in areas such as rotor seal slots, rotor faces, exhaust ports and intake system. In an ideal world the engine would last a lot longer if it were driven (after warming) in a spirited fashion with throttle opened wide and minimal time idling in traffic.
SOLUTION
I recommend using Amsoil P.I. fuel additive when refueling the car at rate of approx. 200 to 1. Amsoil P.I. has been proven to reduce combustion chamber deposits in 100% of vehicles tested. As a concentrated detergent, Amsoil P.I. is highly effective in cleaning combustion chamber deposits inside your engine.
These products are safe to use in conjunction with catalytic converters and oxygen sensors.
BENEFITS
- Minimise exhaust port clogging
- Minimise apex seal wear
- Increase engine life and longevity
- Prevent fuel injector contamination
Amsoil P.I. (Performance Improver) is designed and proven effective with cylinder engines reducing carbon deposits in the combustion chamber, valves, pistons and fuel injectors.
EASY WAY TO ADMINISTER
I recommend administering the premixed correct ratio of Amsoil 2 cycle oil and Amsoil P.I. when refueling at servo.
Simply measure out 100mls of Rx8 fuel additive mix for every 15 litres of fuel you add to the tank.
That’s approximatley,
35mls per every 5 litres of petrol or,
70mls per every 10 litres of petrol.
Or in terms of your tank approx.
200ml per ½ tank
400ml per full tank
Simply use the measuring bottle (pictured) available from Mildren Rotary Automotive for only $7.95. Squeeze, measure and pour.
RE-CHARGING YOUR MEASURING BOTTLE MIX OF OIL & P.I.
Your semi automatic twin chamber-measuring bottle is handy to use, easily storable in your car without leakage and re-usable.
When empty, simply refill by adding two 355ml bottles of Amsoi P.I. and top up with 300ml of Amsoil Dominator 2 cycle oil (fill to the bottom of the 100ml chamber).
Note – 1 bottle of the Dominator 2 cycle oil will re charge the measuring bottle 3 times.
